There is a date on the calendar that isn't on the calendar. Eleven people clear a Thursday for it. Somebody makes a board. Somebody brings the trophy that cost forty dollars in 2015 and has been fought over every year since. It is not a real holiday, and everybody treats it like one — and that is the whole reason this crest exists.
DRAFT DAY, set in heavy aged-cream slab caps across the opening of a gold laurel wreath. FANTASY FOOTBALL arcing above it in fine letterspaced gold. And on the banner ribbon at the foot of the wreath, the only line that needs saying: THE SEASON STARTS TONIGHT. A small oxblood trophy sits at the crest of the laurel, a football at its base. It is drawn like a 1974 sports-yearbook plate, in three warm inks, with the engraving craft the occasion has always deserved and never once been given.
