The light starts to go about four-thirty this time of year. That's when the woods finally get quiet and everything worth waiting for starts moving, and that's when a reasonable man walks out. So the plate is drawn for the other kind: a bare oak, a low treeline, the sun already half gone behind it, and an empty ladder stand nobody is coming down from. ONE MORE HOUR, arched across the top of a solid engraved frame with all the ceremony of a museum plate. And along the bottom, on a footline, entirely straight-faced: SAID EVERY HUNTER EVERY EVENING. The stand is empty on purpose. The season was never really about the shot. It was about the sitting, in the cold, in the dark, long past the point of reason.
