There is a date on the calendar that isn't on the calendar. Eleven people clear a Thursday for it. Somebody makes a board. Somebody brings the trophy that cost forty dollars in 2015 and has been fought over every year since. It is not a real holiday, and everybody treats it like one, and that is the whole reason this crest exists.

And on the banner ribbon at the foot of the wreath, the only line that needs saying: THE SEASON STARTS TONIGHT. A small trophy sits at the crest of the laurel, a football at its base. It is drawn like a 1974 sports-yearbook plate, with the engraving craft the occasion has always deserved and never once been given.
Soft and easygoing, broken in from the first wear, with a crest that sits in the fabric rather than on top of it, offered in a range of deep, dark shades, the warm-ink-on-dark look this league already dresses by.
For the fortnight before the draft. For the person buying it for him, who does not need to understand waiver wires to know it looks good. And for the last week of December, when the laurel finally means something.
