It is a 1970s studio-craft exhibition poster, drawn for the chest: a round-bellied bottle-vase thrown full-hearted, glaze breaking over the shoulder in a drip you can practically feel, wheel rings ruled across the belly. It is drawn for people who can tell handmade from clip-art at a glance, which, if you throw, is most of what your hobby actually is. The glaze on this pot broke exactly the way the test tile promised it wouldn't. That is the joke, and it is the only one here.
Thick and warm, built to be worn hard and washed often, with a poster that sits in the fabric rather than on top of it, offered in a range of unfired-clay shades, the range you actually wear in a studio, the one place clay stains everything else.
This is the cold-morning garment of the practice: the one that goes on over everything for the drive to an eight a.m. wheel slot, and the one that is still on at the end of a Tuesday evening class. It is also the gift that lands when "she does pottery" is the one fact you have to work with.
