There is a sweatshirt for the person who likes libraries, and it has a rainbow on it. This one is for the person who runs one. "PROPERTY OF THE LIBRARY" typed small across the head of the card, SCHOOL LIBRARIAN struck across the middle as a full-width plate heading, four ruled lines waiting to be filled, an oxblood "DATE DUE" stamp pressed over them at a tilt with the broken ink bite of real rubber on paper — and "KEEPER OF THE STACKS" closing the foot, small and dry and earned.
The trick is what isn't printed. The card's buff paper is missing on purpose: only the ink is printed, so the fabric itself becomes the card. That is why it works on every shade below, and it is why it looks typeset rather than cut out.
Printed on the Gildan 18000 heavy-blend crewneck: substantial, warm, ribbed at the cuffs and waist, and built for a room that is always three degrees too cold. Direct-to-garment printed in three archival inks — ink black, faded indigo and oxblood stamp red — so the card sits in the fabric rather than on top of it. Offered in six paper shades — sand, ash, white, sport grey, light blue and carolina blue — because a catalogue card was never white, and this one shouldn't be either.
It is the sweatshirt that lives on the back of her chair from October onward. It is also the one gift that lands when the mug and the rainbow tote have not: it looks like it came out of the library, because it did.
